ZS40/TZ60 - Alligator Basking in the Sun
Mar 31, 2014

This is the smallest of the two 'gators I saw yesterday - this one about 9 feet long, and the other 12 feet. It's a state park and there are warning signs for these wild critters, but no actual restrictions as to how close you can get.  From what I hear, the mothers attack when they are protecting young, but usually they just scurry away when a human approaches. And that might not apply to the larger bull 'gators.

The ZS40 got me this closeup (vertical crop only) from about 35 feet away.  f6.4, 1/125 handheld, ISO 100.

You can see where the sun line breaks across the body at an angle just behind the head, and sunshine on an alligator is hard to deal with in PP (much worse when the skin is wet). But since the 'gators are there to sun themselves, it helps to have a cloud at least partly blocking the sun.
