Does corners sharpness really matter on 24-70?

After reading lots of comments about the 24-70 and 28-70 it appears that many are finding the 28-70 better value and for a walkabout zoom performance is very good in the center of the frame .

I know that contrast, distortion etc also comes into it but often software will correct this, so I am wondering how important corner sharpness really is ?

I guess to get this you need to be up at f8/f11 and depending on the light it's not always possible to get without a tripod, what type of photography needs corner sharpness?

I mainly do Landscapes and if you allow for cropping then you can still achieve sharp corners with a kit lens

Are we becoming obsessed with corner pixel peeping when in real life we never actually need to, I know I have been!
