Tamron 17-50 F/2.8 at under $300 and easy to find through Ebay, BH, Ado, KEH, etc.

This will produce very sharp images, and allow good flash-less indoor photography. It's sharp across the frame and the bokeh is decent.

For those tele/birding moments, get the Sony 55-300 at just over $200 used. It's the sharpest budget telezoom available.

Avoid super zooms, they're just not that good and they're called vacation lenses for a reason.
