Calibrated workflow+printer ICC but output is too dark/shaded

Hello,

I recently sent a few large prints (TIFF with embedded Adobe RGB color profile) to a commercial printer. I used their ICC for photo paper when softproofing in Lightroom and Photoshop and I have a calibrated workflow with Spyder3 Express. Monitor Dell U2412M.

The images that came back seem to have the colours right but they are significantly more dark than on my monitor. Perhaps the correct term is that they lack luminance? Like if someone put some semitransparent grey film on top of the images.

I thought I would be spared these kinds of problems when implementing a hardware-calibrated workflow.

Is this a common problem when sending away to print, even when having a calibrated workflow?

/g
