Unless I'm mistaken, Face Detection only work in Multi metering mode, and Wide focus mode. Which is a pain if you also have AF-C enabled, because you'll see the little green dancing dots (PDAF AF sensors), and they seem to override the green box of face detection in about 60 to 80% of cases, meaning you get said green box only if the person is facing you straight, not head tilted in the slightest way, or a hand to the face or anything distracting at all (go tell your kids not to turn their head even an inch, lol).

So in this regard, and in AF-C mode, NEX face detection actually works a little better
