Apparently Nikon's problem is that the D700 was *too* successful.

At the time prior to the D700's release Nikon did not have a consumer full frame DSLR.  Canon did with the Canon 5D MkI.  Nikon was plodding along the APS-C sensor path D70,D100,D200,etc...

Nikon needed a 'home run' camera to compete with the Canon 5D MkII.  That was the D700.  Just so they didn't leave their D200 users behind they put out the D300 as well.  As far as I could tell, the writing was on the wall in for the APS-C prosumer cameras - and D300 would be the end of the line for the "prosumer" APS-C market.

So where are we now?  Nikon needed a cheaper full frame camera to try and get the D300 users (D610) and provided an evolution of the D700, the D800.  The D800 may have a been a result of conceding the sports market to Canon and concentrating on non sports photography.
