Optical scheme rhetorical question: P 45-175 vs 100-300
4 months ago

Hi! Initially Panasonic made 45-200 and 100-300 mm lenses. Then they 'replaced' 45-200 with more compact 45-175 with internal zooming. So is it possible to create a new, say, 100-300 lens with 45-175' style optical scheme which will be smaller and lighter?

What is the fundamental difference between 45-200 and 45-175 optical schemes? I suppose 45-175 has some bad properties so that we have many extending on zoom lenses (I'm not considering shutter shock of 45-175 -- it's not linked with optical scheme, I suppose). The known difference is faster aperture decrease with zooming (see fig.). But is in enough reason to make bigger extending lenses? I suppose I missed something.

I can explain the source of my question: I have both 45-175 and 100-300 and I feel like 100-300 is 'more bigger and heavy physically' than 'bigger in focus length' then 45-175 (it's not real, just appearance). Thank you for discussion!
