From Bloomberg, no less.

What impressed me the most is how the author points out that demonizing those with opposing views simply does not work.

This is genuine liberal thinking, not the self righteous, hate tinged venom that comes from the far left.

As someone who has shot guns since childhood, and doesn't particularly like the idea of untrained idiots toting guns around everywhere, I agree with what they say.

Make the gun owner fully accountable for what happens with a gun they own. If they're responsible, that should be no problem. If they're careless and have no respect for the potential danger, like Oscar Pistorius, they need to be in jail. They will kill someone, or their negligence will lead to a death. A few high profile jailings, and even the dullest clod will think twice before packing a gun around, just because they can. And that is the way it should be.

The right to bear arms does not negate the responsibility that comes with a potentially deadly device, or the consequences of failing to exercise the right in a competent manner. Just as the right to free speech does not negate the responsibility to exercise it wisely, or the consequences of libel or deliberate false statements.
