Huh, I knew the 17mm wasn't as sharp as some of the better primes but I didn't think it was that bad...

If we go by say Lenstip's test results, the 17mm/1.8 turns in a best MTF50 resolution of 65 lpmm. To equal that from a cropped 15mm, that hypothetical 15mm lens would have to exceed 74 lpmm. This level is quite high for m43, but not exactly unknown. The 20/1.7, Sigma 30/2.8, PL25, PL42.5, 45/1.8, Sigma 60/2.8, 75/1.8 can all do this. The macros and MF Voigtlanders also do this. Even the F2.8 zooms can do this. Although not yet tested by Lenstip, I am sure the 25/1.8 should also comfortably reach 74 lpmm.

If the PL15 does not achieve 74 lpmm, it will join the 17mm as one of the least sharp of m43 primes This is not impossible given that the 12, 14, and the other 17 primes do not achieve 74 lpmm either. So it remains to be seen if a truly sharp (if you define 74 lpmm as truly sharp) WA prime could appear in m43. Would be interesting to watch.

Here are the MTFs for the Panasonic 15, 20 and 25mm lenses.  Based on these MTF the new 15mm should at least match and likely exceed the MTF50 results of the 20 and 25mm.  What is most noticeable from the 15mm MTF is the very gradual rolloff towards the edges.  That would suggest a very sharp image across the frame wide open, which we have not seen up to now in a wide angle fast lens.
