A question about lens design:

I've had two p/s film cameras, the Contax T2 and the Leica CM.  I sold the CM for the NEX-7.  I still use the Contax, it's a delightful little camera for street use and landscapes.  Neither one can do brokah very well.  When I put up the same images with the Contax and the NEX-7 when it's in JPEG, the Contax always comes out ahead in sharpness and color.  It has a very good lens and is one of the reasons I can't give it up.  My question is; for such a small lens, the Carl Zeiss Sonnar T 38mm. f/2.8 that measures only 1 1/4''X 1/2", be so good  This is a full frame camera.  Why do other digital cameras that are not even full frame need such a large lens?  And, by the way, why can't full frame digital cameras be as small as full frame 35mm p/s cameras.  Why do the have to be so big, includiing the lens?

Sony Alpha NEX-7 Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T2
