A7 - plenty of dynamic range and fine detail
Mar 24, 2014

From test shots with the A7 during the last days to learn the camera better to know I also took a serious look at the dynamic range. The best method for such real life tesing, I think, is shooting a backlight scene at the ocean, using raw file format. This scene shows nice detail in the highlight areas, and also pretty nice detail in the darkest areas which normally should be pure black in the picture to get visually attractive contrast. The 100% crop with the ferry also shows very fine detail. The lens was the A-mount Zeiss 50 mm f:1.4. Exposure 1/2000 sec at f:8 and base-ISO.

What is your experience with real life dynamic range from the A7 sensor?

The test scene. The sun almost shines trough the clouds at upper left, bright light on the ocean, and a backlit ferry pretty far away.

A 100% crop brightened so that detail in the hull is showing up, and very fine detail like wires and antennas are also separated. Not bad at all!
