Trying to understand pixel density

So I'm deciding between the D610 and the D7100, and I'm a little stuck on pixel density (and my lack of comprehension of what that is and its implications). My impression from reading is that the D7100 has a very high pixel density (24 megapixels crammed onto a DX sensor) and as a result is more demanding and dependent on technique vs. previous DX cameras.

So does that mean that the D610, with 24 megapixels spread across a larger sensor, is a more forgiving camera?

(It's not that I'm really worried about technique, but I wonder if 24 megapixels might be overkill for a DX sensor and perhaps just about right for a FX sensor.)
