My D600 (pretty much the same camera) hunts with telephoto in low light (above ISO 3200 and wide open to keep shutter speed above 1/640) with moving targets. However this is not true in stage lighting (which is not low light on the target in the true sense). I do not have this issue with the 24-85mm VR "kit" lens, or primes. I do not use the focus assist light, as it distracts the subject.

So, I pay attention to the "focus" dot and arrows and manually focus. This seems to work OK.
