He actually says its the lens character of his older 3MP camera that made for better images:
I had a 3 megapixel camera that took better “vintage” photos because the lens wasn’t that good. Actual old camera lenses caused a mild blur in the photos, and it’s that blur that holds the key to the look of the past; at least for me. The blur ads emotional distance and mystery to the photograph.
I have a Helios 44K-4 lens that I use for regularly for similarly for its lovely character, the 44 series lenses are actually a copy of a Zeiss design from the 1930s. The Helios is crazy sharp over most of the frame though, allowing for a bit of field curvature. Old lenses can be great lenses indeed!
