Basic question about highlight/shadow correction settings.

There is a current thread about highlight and shadow correction. My attempt to learn more about about these turned up many discussions and various opinions that seemed informed, but nothing authoritative so in desperation I turned to my Pentax K30 manual.

The section header said, "Expands the dynamic range and enables a wider range of tones expression by the CMOS sensor and reduces the occurrence of overexposed and underexposed areas." The only other information I found said, "When Highlight Correction is enabled, the minimum sensitivity is set to ISO200." I did not see anything about shadow correction.

The bottom line question is what are the pros and cons or when and when not should these settings be used? I assume they are intended for JPEGs and who would not want to extend the DR when needed?

ANSWER:
Pentax K-30
