Focusing problem with a D lens

Lately, I have noticed that I am missing shots because the my "D" lens does not focus consistently on static subjects.  I tried to microadjust the focus using Reikan's Focal but the lens could not be adjusted due to poor repeatability.

I tried focusing the lens, using the centerpoint AFS-S, and I focus far, get a beep (for in focus), then focus near, get the beep and take a picture and about 1/3 of the times, the picture in not in focus.

Any thoughts on why this would occur?  It only happens with one lens on my D800E.  Is this the nature of the older "D" lenses?

Thanks,

S
