The weird thing is that I've taken some more shots with the EM1 and a different lens and it doesn't seem to be as pronounced, and I've taken some shots with the 12-40 on a different body and there doesn't seem to be an issue. I've no idea how or if this could be possible, but somehow, it only seems to be the EM1 + 12-40 combo that produces this - or at least as badly as this. Bear in mind the photos I showed were huge crops from the originals - so it's not quite as bad as it looks. Still not good though!

If it's only happening with the 12-40 then I wonder if there is any connection to the issue discussed here:
