Overexposure D7100 and 50mm

Hi all,

I'm looking for some help and advice using my new D7100.

Shooting in Aperture Priority, f2.8, ISO 100 using the 50mm 1.8G prime lens. I expect to be able to take sharp handheld shots of my children but I'm failing abysmally! I know it's my technique and not the camera but I need to try and understand what's going on so I can get better shots. I have two problems:

1. Using the settings above, I took photos in the woods of my kids and they were all over exposed. The shutter speed doesn't increase to a fast enough speed to avoid over exposing and I don't know why?

2. I'm having trouble getting sharp images. The shutter speed always seems to be a bit low (1/80) and focussing seems to be hit and miss. I usually use the aperture priority, auto ISO, and f2.8, taking photos of my fast moving toddler!

I'd be greatful if anyone has any advice to help me improve my shots.

Thanks!
