There's no need to spend $1000. A dual lens E-PM2 kit for $399, RX100, NEX-3N, X-A1, or one of the 1/1.7" compacts on sale would also be a big improvement in capability over your phone.

If you are happy with your iPhone, don't bother spending the money. If you want to take your photography in a direction that the iPhone can't really go, get a camera.

Low light, night scenes, night skies, fast motion, manual focus, shutter speed control for freezing or blurring movement, zoom, blurry backgrounds and depth of field manipulation, close up macros, and clever use of flash are all areas that a camera could take you that the iPhone cannot. If you are content with wide angle photos in bright light, the iPhone is not too bad.
