the cameras themselves have long been a "means to an end", in that the accessories were (past tense) where the money is. Filters, lenses, flash units etc. were the profitable items. Film and processing were the really profitable items. Attachment rate of camera to lens or flash is way down, and film processing and printing has all but disappeared. Prints from digital is flagging as the mindset is no longer print and album based, rather, store images electronically (for free!). Camera makers have given us the "Swiss Army Knife" approach, where the cameras are so comprehensive, accessories are rarely required. Filters? PP it. Tripod? Build in anti shake. Fast film? Change ISO on the fly. Hot shoe flash? It's built in. Versatile lens? The kit came with an 18-55 or 18-105, do I need more?
