Weird D800 AF failure

Day before yesterday I finally got around to cleaning the dust from the sensor on my D800.   When I finished, PDAF was no longer working properly.

When I try to focus through the viewfinder, sometimes it moves toward correct focus, but more often it does not.  However, in either case, it rapidly decides to move to the closest focus position.

I've tried different lenses, D and G, different batteries, turned the camera on and off several times, mirror lock up.  Both S and C mode.  Every focus mode.  I see nothing unusual inside the body.

So I'm going to send it to APS for repair.

Has anyone run into this problem or have any thought about what could have gone wrong?

Thanks in advance.
