Anyone that shoots people, candid, needs instantaneous focus. The beauty of manual focusing was that you would set it once and shoot away as people moved, maybe focus was not pin sharp, but you had the capture done. Slow focusing means lag, means losing photo opps. Sports or wildlife are just two other areas where fast AF is required, but those that shoot things in motion and like to have good composition cannot wait for camera to focus.

It's so simple ...
