The 70-300mm is also steep at $1000. Plus it has a 62mm filter size, which means its pretty large.

Same price as Sony's 70-300G. The smaller image circle doesn't make much difference.

  1. The 70-300mm G is overpriced.
  2. The 70-300mm G covers a full frame sensor. Not a 1" sensor

It's still a 70-300. Smaller image circle doesn't make a tele easier to design. It's easier to increase contrast, and the optics can emphasize sharpness in what would be the center of the full frame (ignoring what would be the edges). But that center needs to be even sharper to provide good resolution at 18MP over a very small area. The aperture is still (300/5.6)mm in diameter. It still needs efficient vibration reduction and fast autofocus.

The Sony 70-300G competes, optically, with the $1600 Canon 70-300L (which in turn has better build and presumably faster AF). It's better than the $600 Nikon lens.
