No face detection used.  S-AF, touch of ring to check, focus where I wanted it.  If I had focused on the eyes the tip of the nose would have been distractingly blurred and the ears sharper than I wanted.  The point of the shot, frankly, was to make the dog look good while tick bites were still visibly raw in her ears.

When Face Detection doesn't detect an eye it defaults to the center of the face frame or maybe just on the closest plane, which in both cases usually is the nose. People at Olympus know that, but didn't come up with a solution yet. My simple solution would be to just make the camera focus on the upper third's center of the face frame, which usually is between the eyes.
