Ah, were it only true, it would really be a "surprise function" on a D800.

What you have described is the method of performing trap focus on a D700 (and several other earlier Nikons).  Unfortunately, in their wisdom, Nikon has removed this ability in the D800.  Pressing the shutter in a D800 will cause a picture to be taken immediately, regardless of whether or not something is in focus.
