Gradient Domain Color Restoration of Clipped Highlights
1

Hi!

I growing gray hair over a particular sunset image of mine - as always, gradients towards the sun are a problem. I'm getting what can only be described as a greenish gray looking ring. It isn't very visible on a display, but printing gave me a proper 2 hour headache.

Not that the image is all that great or that I couldn't have helped the issue with more careful exposure or even HDR - although something like this usually only goes away with an additional 7 or so stops in the highlights though and very careful and time consuming manual blending in PS.

But until we get a completely new generation of digital sensors that expand their highlight DR by literally many stops, I think this recovery method might be of great help and I hope it find its way into ACR/LR RAW conversion:

I don't have any relationship with the authors, I just stumbled across their work on google. Here's a video demo:

Kudos to the authors!

Best regards,
Martin
