2464x1640 luma? So why not simply save a 'half' 12-bit RGB pixel by binning the two greens (similar to dcraw -h)? A bit more space, but I'd much prefer it to the YCrCb compression.

It just follows the jpeg path to the point where the tone curve is applied. Even noise reduction is very similar. I have no slightest idea why this small nef format was introduced. My only hope is that it is a bridge to 12-bit jpegs.
