There has been plenty of criticism about the 1.8 too; being a tad soft.

I'm fairly certain a good percentage of these criticisms come from 20mm fanboys and review trollers who have never even used the Olympus 17mm f/1.8 and just like to pixel peep test charts from reviewers.

I'm fairly certain that the criticism is confirmed by multiple review sites that have performed objective tests and found the lens to be less than stellar, e.g.

Not a bad lens, but certainly nothing to write home about. If you like the focal length then it will produce decent results.

"less than stellar", "nothing to write home about" hmmmm.... not very neutral choice of words.

Having used both lense, I'll rate important aspects of the lenses like this

Olympus 17mm f/1.8

  • Sharpness : very good
  • Construction : stellar
  • Field qualities : stellar
  • AF : stellar
  • Bokeh : very good
  • CA control : average

Panasonic 20mm f/1.7

  • Sharpness : stellar in the center, very good in the corners
  • Construction : very good
  • Field qualities : good
  • AF : good
  • Bokeh : very good
  • CA control : average

Both are great, but in the field the 17mm f/1.8 is more comfortable to use.
