This is a cross-post I thought you might be interested in.

There is an excellent thread on trains on the Landscape forum:

Here's my contribution, we visited Usuaia to pick up our ship for our trip to Antarctica in 2007.

In Tierra del Fuego, EVERYTHING is "at the end of the world" - Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world.

These trains were originally used to take prisoners out into the forests to cut wood for buildings and fuel for their own prisons. They rode on benches on flatcars, back to back facing out, and out in the (usually unpleasant) weather - the cars are very narrow, as you can see.

I'ts surprising that Tierra del Fuego has so much forest - the things one usually sees in magazines & such ususlly feature the more wind-swept, barren views.

Now the trains are run for tourists: the "Tren del Fin del Mundo".

We visited Usuaia to pick up our ship for our trip to Antarctica.
