How wireless flash works?

I've been looking this on forums and google for days and cannot grasp the possibilities envolved. As far as I went, the flash can be mounted on camera, controlled remotely by built-in flash or radio signal or by an external trigger. Is that correct?

I got a SB 600, a D70S and a D3100. If I understood Ken Rockwell correctly, the D70S can control the SB 600 remotely using the built in flash (not radio), right? So this means the SB 600 detects the sudden light flash and uses this as a guide?

If so, why can't I use D3100's built-in as a trigger also?

Could anyone direct me to a SIMPLE guide to setting SB 600 as a slave with the D70s?
