>>>> Challenge 230: Watching Highlights <<<<
Mar 6, 2014

It’s a simple charge: Deal thoughtfully with highlights in an artistic image. As long as you do that, anything goes.

Yes, I’m talking about those pesky areas of our images that are just so bright that all detail is gone. Those blown, clipped highlights. We see them in clouds, waves, streetlights, neon signs, bald heads, snow, wherever, and usually we just plain don’t want them. Except sometimes we do. Specular highlights are often helpful in food photography and certain other kinds of shots. Rarely, a shot can benefit from some off-the-charts highlights. Well, let’s deal with them. Use thoughtful exposure settings, check the histogram, go nuts with post-processing, whatever it takes. If you’re in doubt about what to do, just search the web for “highlights in photography.” Then deal with them. J

The challenge starts now and will last until March 17 at 21h GMT, when we will open the voting period.

Newcomers are totally welcome and encouraged to join the fun. Any 4/3 or m4/3 camera can enter the Competition gallery with an image captured during the challenge period, and any camera at all can enter the Exhibition gallery with an image taken any time. Just post here if you need assistance to get images into the gallery or if you are not certain what's going on. We all started off clueless and make the same mistakes.

To post a photo in any of the galleries, just select the gallery of choice from below: Competition or Exhibition or Originals. On the top of the page you will see "edit this gallery", click on that and it will ask for a password. Enter "kickass" (don't ask, just keep it lower case) and you should be able to make it from there to upload your image. If you still need assistance, ask and you shall be answered. Sometimes the answer is even the right one!

Add your name after the title, in the title. Please limit your image sizes to 800 pixels or less on the long side, and make sure the file size is no more than 200kB. Pbase lets us run these challenges free on their website, so please honor their generosity by keeping your file size reasonable. Ensure the EXIF data is intact for the competition, with the camera model and the date it was taken.

If your clock doesn't show GMT (and whose does?) here is Catman’s time calculator: http://www.worldtimeserver.com/current_time_in_UTC.aspx

Most important of all: HAVE FUN!
