The appeal to me is quite simple. Given correct focus, basically three things control the 'look' of a photograph, aperture, shutter speed and ISO. With a camera like the X-T1 various combinations of all three, or any two if one of the parameters is set at a fixed value, say the aperture for a certain depth of field, can be set by direct actuation of the control dials and aperture ring.
