For some it's a style thing.  Others prefer the simplicity of a device that doesn't require eleventy-seven button presses and an on screen menu to change function.  My preference was for a smallish camera with a largish sensor. The X100 met my needs.  It managed to do that without soft releases, leather cases, designer straps, and thumb holds Not that there is anything wrong with those do-dads.

I will say that the way of setting modes is so much nicer  to me than requiring a separate mode dial.  Simple.  Pick a shutter speed or Auto if the camera can decide.   Pick an aperture or Auto if the camera can decide.  If both are set to Auto then you get point-and-shoot mode suitable for handing the camera to old aunt Sally for some shots.
