Real world DR comparison?
Mar 4, 2014

I own SX280 and S95 and find them taking great pictures however I need to be very carefull with the exposure setting in harsh contrasty conditions to avoid either blown highlights or crushed shadows. I've tried Brian's iContrast settings, but they don't work for me as I often need ISO 80 shots for large prints. So I'm considering a larger sensor camera (G1X II) but as far as I can see from the DxO labs meassurements, larger sensors doesn't ensure higher DR. For instance the G1X (10.8 evs) doesn't have a higher DR rating than the S120 (11.9 evs). So perhaps this DxO mark doesn't really tell much about real world DR, or doesn't the sensor size have anything to do with this? Am I missing something? A photo site with real world shots from different cameras of a really harsh scene would be very helpfull I think, but does it exist?

If you have any photos of a high contrast scene shot with two different sensor size cameras, please do post them.

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is; will a G1X or other larger sensor camera give me any DR advantage. I know DR decreases with higher ISO so larger sensors will have an advantage there, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm thinking about a very sunny scene at base ISO.
