Best inexpensive D5300 lens for birds in flight?

I'm buying a telephoto/zoom this month for my birthday and the Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 AF APO DG OS HSM is currently at the top of my list due to its max 500mm zoom and range. Is there a better fixed focal length lens for D5300 for under $1000 USD for taking photos of birds in flight? Autofocus speed, f-stop, and optical quality matter to me.  I've read that Sigma 150-500 images above 400mm are soft.  I'd like more than 300mm sometimes. I also know that $1000 is not enough to get a really good telephoto.  Any opinion info is sincerely appreciated.
