Shutter count.

So, I have been pondering this ever since I bought my D50 in 2005. There is lots of talk about the life of the shutter in a digital camera. I do not know if this is a valid thing, or if it's just talk. So, do they wear out faster than on a 35mm? I know I used my Rollei for many years and no idea how many clicks went through it. I would like to ask your opinions rather that googling it. And on the subject of shutter count, where do you find your camera's count?
