Attach Red Dot Sight to 70-400 tripod collar foot?

I just got a red dot sight (Electro Dot RD400).  I would like to mount this to the upturned foot of my 70-400.  Has anyone done this?  Suggestions?  The foot has standard 1/4" and 3/8" threaded holes.  The base plate for the sight has two slots that accept screws (I know nothing of firearms -- I assume the sight is designed to have this plate screwed to a rifle.)

The sight came with a hot-shoe adapter.  Of course, it is not a Sony/Minolta adapter, so I would have to use a second adapter.  Reports I've read indicate that the hot-shoe mount is too pliable to start with -- I imagine with the added second adapter, this would end up unsatisfactory.

Basically, I'm seeking advice on the best way to attach the RDS rail to the tripod collar foot.

Thanks.
