What does "200mm" mean on an RX10 telephoto?
Feb 27, 2014

Hi folks,

I bought a Sony RX10 because I thought it was exactly what I needed. I have a Canon EOS 70D with a 15-55mm EF-S and 55-250mm EF-S lenses and the 24-200mm of the RX10 seemed perfect, almost like combining two lenses into one!

I had assumed that "200mm" meant a 35mm equivalent. I know that 250mm on my 70D crop sensor is equivalent to maybe 400mm on a full-frame, so I had assumed that 200mm on a sensor even smaller (1" on the RX10) would be a really far-reaching zoom.

However, now I see that the 200mm of the RX10 fills the screen about the same way the 100mm of my 70D fills the screen.

Instead of getting a far-reaching zoom, it seems to be closer to a 100mm zoom of an APS-C sensor.

What am I missing here?
