A7r + FE55 I get a whole lot of fringing, is this normal?

I was so happy with this camera and lens, I get some amazing shots with it. But occasionally I do get a whole lot of fringing and I remember reading this lens was actually really good with controlling just that. It must be user error?

Here is an example I shot this evening. I know the situation is not the best and I know I'm shooting against the sky, but the sky wasn't that bright anymore. Even with much cheaper vintage lenses I never get this much fringing. Lens hood was on. The trees seem to be red, but they're not supposed to

100% crop of a bit that's not even toward the corners:

What's causing this and how can I avoid it, apart from the usual: stop down or don't shoot against the sky, because I chose to shoot at 1.8 and it's nice to have a bit of the sky in the photo I think.

Btw these aren't editied at all and I know how to defringe with LR.
