I've been through more than a dozen airports this last year. My carryon was a backpack with a camera, 3 lens, spare batteries, charger, filters, storage cards, and a laptop.

I always remove the laptop per their instructions. Have never had a single question about the camera, lenses and other electronics in the backpack. (all spare batteries always have a protective cover on them.)

I would hate to check valuables in my baggage. I used to travel with a shotgun for competitions, and one time it came off the plane with a cracked stock even though it was in a hard case. It was Soutwest Airlines who broke it, btw and I'm glad to point out their name, lol.
