Obsolescence question

About how many years does it take for the logic and mechanics of an older mid-level camera to be outpaced by a modern "entry-level" camera?

For instance, about 7 years ago I purchased a D300 which I still use and it still takes very nice pictures for my purposes.  However, with regard to things like autofocus accuracy & speed, noise, auto exposure, etc - do current entry level DSLRs (like the D3300, etc) perform better at this point than my old D300?

I'm just curious at what point any purchase becomes an upgrade to what I have.

Thanks in advance.
