A real world experiment could be to shoot at f-stops from wide open to f/22 with for example 5D and D800 (using a good lens, the same if possible) , and see at which f-stop the diffraction starts to be 'clearly visible' at 100% view. My guess is that the resolution limiting effect of diffraction will become visible at a larger aperture on D800.
