Plenty of great photography has been made with on-camera flash - Araki, Martin Parr, Juergen Teller, Paul Graham etc etc...

Nikon's pop-up flash is ingenious, and it is perfectly workable if used with prime lenses with their lens hoods removed.

If I used a D4 rather than a D800 I would keep one of those tiny Nikon flashguns (SB300/SB400) in my pocket.

I have several larger hotshoe mounted flashguns (and various studio lights), but a pop-up flash, being so close to lens axis, has its own special aesthetic.
