What does 'white' mean?

White is the "reference white" used in the Lightness calculation.

How bright is it?

It can be any brightness. Depends on the luminance, viewing conditions, etc.

When you're calculating Lightness, such as CIELAB L*, you're comparing the luminance of a color to the luminance of whatever you have chosen to be the reference white.

Good, you're getting there, what is the luminance of the reference white?

Bob

Any luminance.

Are you getting to your point soon? This is getting tiresome.

So we have some luminance -> any luminance.
