As you say "Nikon Japan has checked the camera on several occasions & since it's within factory standards"

Nikon say in their brochures AF is extremely accurate and explain in your camera instructions some subjects fool AF into focussing either at the wrong distance or not at all. Nikon go on to say when AF is not accurate switch to manual focus.

It is a safe bet on each of the several occasions Nikon has checked your camera they found AF to perform very accurate using a target where the camera should perform well.

If you want accurate focus with a subject where AF does not perform well, you could do what the instruction books suggests and switch to manual focus.

Great images are often of good subjects.
If they are great images does what lens, body or technique was used matter more than the skill of the photographer?
