All the silliness about MILC needs to end
10 months ago

On these forums we seem to have a rash of stupid threads that have one of these two themes:

  1. MILC cameras will dominate the world. The DSLR is dead.
  2. MILC is a huge failure, the DSLR is still king.

Anyone with any common sense knows that the new mirrorless format is just another tool. There are certain applications where it has advantages, and others where it doesn't.

A product does not need to dominate sales in order to be a success. Those rangefinder digital cameras have an incredibly small market share, yet seem to be doing pretty well for Leica. And those underwater cameras have a minuscule market share, yet every camera brand seems to be making a few today.

For at least the foreseeable future, the DSLR will still be the tool of choice for action, sports and birding. And when people pay $5,000 for a wedding photographer, they want to see big honking cameras and lenses being used to reassure them that their photographer is a "real pro."

There is only one reason that Canon and Nikon aren't going full steam ahead on MILC cameras.... they don't need to. They are still profitable, and they are still selling an awful lot of DSLRs. One thing for certain, a cameraphone will never replace a Nikon D800 or a Canon 1Dx. They can rest easy on that fact.

Olympus, Panasonic, SamsungĀ and Fuji really have no other option than to produce MILC cameras. This is a new product, with some potential, and they can dominate it while Canon and Nikon are napping. They tried making (or rebadging) DSLRs, and it didn't work out that well for them. But you can safely predict that if MILC cameras ever do become hot sellers, the big two will jump in with both feet.

Many of us use both types of camera, and just don't understand all the giddy claims that "MILC will Rule" or the gleeful reports of "disappointing sales for MILC cameras" by the DSLR fans.

It really is time to give all this stuff a rest. Both formats have their place, and both do certain things really well.

And there is absolutely nothing bad about us having more choices.
