No, I think "brightness" is the correct word.

Can you suggest a formula converting brightness units to raw data?

Nothing to convert. The raw data are brightness values for the array of pixels.

Any conversion would be like the curves in Photoshop -- you can compress or expand the intervals to suit your display device, but (except for special graphic effects) the order of the numbers is retained. If one pixel received more light than another, the corresponding number will be higher, both in the raw data and in the TIFF file data.

(Let's assume a mono image to keep it simple.)
