Help explaining focal length and compact superzooms

Hi

I have a friend who wants to buy a compact, super zoom style camera. He knows that for example a 400mm on an SLR is a telephoto and 15mm is wide angle but he cannot get his head around how lenses on a compact that are described as say 5-42mm give the same zoom range. I know the reasons and have tried to explain it in technical terms re sensor size, etc. but he didn't really follow. Can someone give me or guide me to a completly non-technical explanation. The guy is an economist so he's not stupid, he just can't grasp this.

Cheers

Col
