Good point David, many if not all dslr bodies do not have hot shoe covers at all.  This omission has not caused me any grief.  But the pedantic mores that allow me not to lose lens caps are too strong to allow me to even lose a hot shoe blanking plate .... grrrr.  However there is some sense to them where they are a combination device that also protects the electrical contacts provided for an accessory clip in evf.  Of course this type is impossible to replace with anything other than the oem version if ever lost.
