Yes, but that isn't true, the camera doesn't have to sample the whole sensor for AF, it just does windowed readout, reading out the AF points only. Then for the main capture, the two sub-pixels are binned on the chip. There is only one readout transistor per full pixel.

I have not found any reference for that. Do you have a link?

Somewhere. Believe it or not as you wish. It's more likely that Canon is sharing a readout transistor, as they do on most of their sensors than they have magically multiplied the speed of the DIGIC.
